Grothman: Sanctuary Cities Are Endangering American Lives

Grothman votes to pass H.R. 3009 to enforce federal immigration laws.

(Washington, D.C.) - Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-Glenbeulah) cosponsored and voted to pass the Enforce The Law For Sanctuary Cities Act on Thursday. The bipartisan bill passed 241-179. A sanctuary city is a city in which local law enforcement maintain policies that provide protection for illegal immigrants from being deported or reported to federal authorities. H.R. 3009 would deny a state or local government from receiving criminal alien assistance funding from the federal government if they fail to report immigration status to federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This bill will also open communication between local law enforcement and federal authorities to prevent tragedies like the one in San Francisco earlier this month.

“The horrible tragedy in California, where a young woman was killed by an illegal immigrant with numerous felonies on his record, could have and should have been prevented,” said Congressman Grothman. “It’s particularly frustrating that these sanctuary cities are educating illegal immigrants on how to escape deportation even after committing heinous crimes. President Obama’s refusal to enforce our immigration laws is allowing thousands of criminal aliens to be released into our communities. These sanctuary cities are endangering American lives and that’s why I was proud to cosponsor Congressman Hunter’s bill. It is my hope that America never suffers another tragedy like the one in California again.”

Congressman Grothman introduced similar legislation as a Wisconsin State Senator that addressed the problem of sanctuary cities. His legislation blocked local governments from enacting laws that prevented a government employee from inquiring about an individual’s immigration status and reporting the presence of illegal immigrants to the federal government.

U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman is serving his first term representing Wisconsin’s 6th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Contact his Washington, D.C., office at (202) 225-2476, or online at grothman.house.gov.
